Specifically, Verizon will bring its on-premises 5G Edge network to customers, with Microsoft Azure edge services providing the infrastructure. According to the companies, the solution will allow real-time analysis and ultra-low latency apps to function on-site. “We have built a network that provides real-world, 5G-enabled solutions TODAY,” says Rima Qureshi, EVP and Chief Strategy Officer at Verizon. “By bringing together Verizon’s 5G network and on-site 5G Edge platform with Microsoft’s expertise in cloud services, we will enable the development of the next generation technologies everyone has been envisioning.” Microsoft and Verizon say the solution will enable apps using augmented, mixed and virtual reality, computer vision, and machine learning to work on-premises with 5G. The goal is to extend the capabilities across industries through private 5G. “By leveraging Verizon’s 5G network integrated with Microsoft’s cloud and edge capabilities, developers and businesses can benefit from fast, secure and reliable connections to deliver seamless digital experiences from massive industrial IoT workloads to precision medicine,” says Yousef Khalidi, corporate vice president Azure for Operators at Microsoft.

Expanding

Microsoft has been working with Verizon since July when the companies struck a partnership. That initial collaboration saw the giants team to bring IoT solutions to market more quickly. Through a streamlining for critical components, Microsoft says it can accelerate IoT growth. Verizon has been making a push in 5G and holds the largest 5G network in the United States. Earlier this month, the company took to the stage with Apple as a major partner behind Cupertino’s first 5G iPhone.
