I commented yesterday that this was an aggressive move by Microsoft. Not least because users who are downloading a third-party have already made their mind up. They probably don’t want to be pushed to try Edge. So, App Suggestions for Microsoft Edge will likely bring controversy, especially when Microsoft’s wording is considered: “You already have Microsoft Edge – the safer, faster browser for Windows 10,” the pop up reads while recommending the native Windows 10 browser. Microsoft has confirmed App Suggestions is a real feature, but the company insists it is just an experiment. Indeed, in a statement to ZDNet, a spokesperson says the recommendation will not be in an upcoming public release of Windows 10: “We’ve tested this functionality with Insiders only – The Windows Insider Program enables Microsoft to test different features, functionality and garner feedback before rolling out broadly. Customers remain in control and can choose the browser of their choice,” the Microsoft spokesperson explains.

Future Release?

The new public release of Windows 10 is version 1809, the October 2018 Update. App Suggestions will not be bundled into next month’s release. Microsoft will likely to experiment with the feature and it could possibly arrive with the 19H1 Windows 10 launch next spring. The company is currently developing that branch on the Skip Ahead section of the Insider Program. It is worth noting that Insiders can turn off App Suggestions by heading to Windows Settings app. Also worthy of consideration is the fact the popup does not stop you from downloading the third-party. If you don’t want this feature, you will be able to turn it off by heading to “Apps & Features” in the Settings app.
