Microsoft clarifies that “[y]ou are able to download another browser that might be available from the Windows Store, but Microsoft Edge will remain the default”. Therefore, even if you install another browser, every time you open an .htm file or click on a link, it will open in Edge. Additionally, the company explains that “the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer cannot be changed.” Therefore, Windows 10 S users will be “stuck” with Bing as their default search engine.
What can users do?
Surely, this information will shake things up for Windows 10 S. Microsoft announced its new, lightweight OS yesterday, and it’s already causing controversy. What seems to be the best move is upgrading your Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft is offering the upgrade for free if you are a teacher, student, or administrator. For everyone else, upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 10 Pro will cost $49. With that price, you can have the full version of Windows 10, without any browser/search engine boundaries.
