Previously available in the Microsoft Store, the Edge Insider extension allow members of the Insider Program to keep up to date with the development status of the browser. Users could see the latest features, announcements, and known issues from the browser. While the Edge Insider extension was removed in April, Microsoft is now preparing a new version. According to ALumia, the company will launch a version that is based on development from Chromium Edge. Removing the extension when the preview was launched in April made sense. Microsoft was essentially moving away from development of the UWP app to focus on the Chromium version. In other words, the extension had become obsolete.

New Edge
Microsoft has been working towards Chromium Edge replacing the current Windows 10 Edge app entirely. A recent leak of the new browser in a stable version pointed to the upcoming end of the UWP Edge experience. This month, Microsoft detailed what it has planned for Chromium Edge in the coming months. A dozen new features have been put on the roadmap for the coming months. Microsoft says the array of new feature will arrive in preview through the Canary channel during September and October. If the repurposed Edge Insider extension is launched in this period, users will be able to follow the development of these features more closely.
