Microsoft first announced the Fall Creators Update at Build 2017 and has been continuing to develop it since. The Windows 10 follow up to the Creators Update has been run through the Windows Insider Program for months. We know Microsoft is signing off on the build before release to manufacturing, which will happen next week (Oct. 17). Many major features will debut with the Fall Creators Update, including Windows Mixed Reality. The new VR/AR platform will be accompanied by numerous hardware headsets shipping over the next month. Another significant aspect of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is Fluent Design. The UI will have close ties to virtual and mixed reality as Windows 10 transitions from 2D to 3D. Scaling across all types of devices and screens is an important part of Project Neon. Again, this is a process that will take years to fully implement. Indeed, Microsoft says the Fall Creators Update will only be “wave 1” of Fluent Design System.

Project Rome

Project Rome is also making its debut with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. By linking with Microsoft Graph, Project Rome developers can build apps that work beyond one device. These apps can spread evenly across form factors, creating a universal experience. “Our vision with Project Rome is to deliver a personal operating system that is not tied to a device or a platform. Imagine that you or your users live in a world where it does not matter what device, platform or form factor you are on, and the task or the project you are working on can happen regardless of the form factor.”
