The culprit is a bug that caused a failure to send NPLoginNotify API notifications from the credential provider framework. What exactly that means and how serious it is I couldn’t tell you, but here’s Microsoft’s justification: “While we originally thought that Build 19041.207 would be the final build, we made the decision to take in one more fix we felt was important to have before making the May 2020 Update generally available,” explained Microsoft in a blog post. “We believe that Build 19041.208 is the new final build and still plan on continuing to improve the overall experience of the May 2020 Update on customers’ PCs as part of our normal servicing cadence.” To be fair to the tech giant, it was cautious when it said it “believes” .207 to be the final build, for this exact reason. Previous feature updates have released with bugs that led to data loss, BSODs, and more. With so many working from home without a dedicated IT department, it’s more important than even that this update is a stable one. Unfortunately, all preview ring Insiders won’t be on this build yet nor the last one. Microsoft is only rolling out the May 2020 update to a “subset” of users automatically – the rest have to do a manual check. You can do that via the usual Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update menu. With hope, we’ll be seeing general availability very soon.
